Friary Guildford Band again played a major part in Guildford’s marking of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. On a beautifully bright autumn Sunday morning, the Band led the civic procession down the High Street and through Tunsgate Arch up to Castle Grounds. Solo cornet Richard Straker sounded The Last Post and Reveille in Holy Trinity Church, and again at the War Memorial where the Band played a selection of hymn music to an appreciative audience after the laying of wreathes. On Monday, Lauren Straker performed The Last Post and Reveille from the Guildhall balcony to mark the 95th anniversary of the Armistice. The newly married couple summed up the atmosphere: ‘It’s a sobering thought that, but for the sacrifices made by so many who fell or were wounded in the service of our country, we would probably be playing a very different repertoire of music today, if indeed we were playing at all. We will remember them.’ Friary’s former soprano cornet player, Jon Hammond, played as part of the military band at Saturday evening’s Service of Remembrance in London’s Royal Albert Hall.
