Welcome to Friary Diary issue 40 - a one page monthly round up of news about the Friary Guildford Brass Band.
BLACKPOOL ROCK:
Once again we made our annual trip to Blackpool for the Spring Festival last weekend. Having been promoted back to the Grand Shield contest last year, we were keen to make the most of the opportunity to qualify for the British Open itself. In a field of 20 bands where only the top two move up, this was no easy task. The test piece was Peter Graham’s The Triumph of Time, commissioned by Prof. Nicholas Childs for Black Dyke Band’s own choice piece for the 2014 European Championships.
Drawn to play 4th in the morning session, Friary produced what was viewed as a highly musical performance by brass website commentators 4barsrest, with Izzi Daws on trombone and Lauren Straker on flugel singled out for particular praise. By the time all 20 bands had played, 4barsrest felt that Friary might just snatch a ticket to the Open, but sadly the adjudicators were slightly less enthusiastic and placed the Band 6th. Whilst some might view that as a disappointment, it is nevertheless an excellent achievement, especially bearing in mind the Band’s previous experience in the Grand Shield two years ago saw them placed 18th and relegated back to the Senior Trophy.
Adjudicators Nigel Boddice and Garry Cutt summarised the performance: ‘Some fine memories here eg. trombone, presentation. Ideally more intense concentration to upgrade consistency.’ ‘Lots to admire in this.’
There was also well-deserved recognition for our trombonist, Izzi Daws who took the Best Instrumentalist award. Sadly, Izzi’s BBC Young Musician journey ended at the semi-final stage, having taken the Brass category title, still a magnificent achievement. Congratulations to her on both counts.
RANKING NEWS:
The May World Rankings saw Friary remain in 26th place.
