Despite the competing attraction of the Last Night of the Proms, not to mention the start of Strictly Come Dancing, St Nicolas Church, Bookham - mentioned in the Domesday Book - was like last year, packed for Friary Brass Band’s recent concert. At the organisers’ request, the music was primarily from stage and screen. Selections from West Side Story, Harry Potter, Oklahoma and Porgy & Bess were interspersed with single items such as Oblivion, The Waltonian and I’ll Walk with God, the latter dedicated to a long-serving church member and brass band player. Soprano cornet player, Glen Carroll, made his solo debut with a heartfelt rendition of Gethsemane. Manhattan Skyline, a personal favourite of Friary MD Nigel Taken, brought the evening to a rousing conclusion.
Rev Barbara McDonald commented: ‘Many thanks for another fantastic concert. It was great to see the church full and the audience enjoying every moment: a real treat to have such high quality live music brought right to our doorstep.’ ‘Everyone is asking when you are coming again,’ she added. Band Chairman, David Wicks was equally delighted: ‘It was an absolute joy to return to St Nicolas and such a pleasure to play to a full house again.’
