Friary Diary - Issue 119 - January 2025

Welcome to Friary Diary issue 119 - a monthly round up of news about the Friary Brass Band.

MEADOWS CAROLLING:

Despite an icy wind blowing through the atrium at Camberley’s Meadows shopping centre, Friary’s Christmas carolling session raised more than £1,135 from generous, warm-hearted shoppers.  Split equally between Macmillan Cancer Relief and band funds, the amount is more than the combined total of the previous two years’ collections.

Friary Chairman David Wicks was delighted:  ‘In these challenging economic times, the public’s generosity was incredibly humbling.  And with two of our players currently receiving treatment for cancer, the amount raised for Macmillan was particularly satisfying.  Many thanks to all those who kindly donated’ he added.

IBSTOCK PLACE SCHOOL CONCERT:

Our first engagement of the New Year is in Roehampton, supporting Ibstock Place School’s Brass Day.  This event involves not only the school’s brass ensemble but also other young brass players from Wandsworth primary schools.  The day culminates in a FREE concert at 4.00pm which is open to the public.  Although the event is free, there is a suggested donation of £6 per person towards the cost of the day.  Please book tickets via this trybooking link.

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

We are now busy rehearsing for the London & Southern Counties Regional Championships in mid March.  The test piece is Derek Bourgeois’ Diversions and we are of course aiming to secure another invitation to the National Finals in October!

RANKING NEWS:

The 4barsrest.com table was updated at the end of last year, with Friary easing slightly to 33rd in the world, having been overtaken by several Swiss bands following their national championships.  In the brassstats.com table, Friary is also ranked 33rd  following the update on 1st January.
